Censored image effect

This Photoshop tutorial will teach you how to create a censored image effect. This effect use the mosaic filter to create the censored effect. For this tutorial I have used a free stock image of a lady which is available at: www.sxc.hu

Step 1

Open an image in Photoshop.




Step 2


Using the Elliptical Marquee Tool or Rectangular marquee tool and select the area you wish to censor. I have made a selection around the face area.




Step 3

Select filter > pixelate > mosaic and set the cell size to 8 and click ok. You may need to change the cell size for image depending on the size.



You should now have a censored image.

Remove objects from image

This Photoshop tutorial will teach you how to remove objects from an image. The Clone stamp tool will be used to remove the objects. For this tutorial I have used a free stock image of a seagull which is available at:www.sxc.hu and will be removing the sailing boat in the background.

Step 1

Open an image in Photoshop.




Step 2

Select the Clone Stamp Tool and choose an appropriate brush size.



Hold down the Alt key and click once to take a sample, preferable somewhere near the object you wish to remove.


Step 3

Now drag your mouse over the object you wish to remove. Note that you may need to retake the sample as the brush follows your mouse movements. Repeat this until the object is completely gone.



You should now have a remove object from an image.

Change eye colour

This Photoshop tutorial will teach you how to change the colour of someones eyes. This tutorial is very simple use the Hue/saturation and Elliptical marquee tool. I have used a free stock image of an eye which is available to download at:www.sxc.hu

Step 1

Open an image of eyes in Photoshop.




Step 2

Using the Elliptical Marquee or Lasso Tool, drag a circle shape around the eye as shown below.




Step 3


Select Layer > New adjustment layer > Hue/Saturation and then click ok. Now adjust the hue/saturation levels to your liking.



You should now have an image with a different eye colour. If your image has two eyes, you can simply repeat the steps above.

Add facial hair

This Photoshop tutorial will teach you how to add facial hair to any photo. This effect is pretty realistic and can give some fun and interesting results.

Adding facial hair

Step 1

Open an image in Photoshop.



Using the eyedropper tool (I) select a sample of hair from the person in the photo. Then hold (alt) and select a different shade of hair.


Step 2

Select the brush tool and open the brush menu, add the following settings:



I have selected 9 pixels for the master diameter.


Step 3

Now open up the brush palette by selecting F5 and add the following settings for shape dynamics. The size jitter is at 100%, minimum diameter at 1%, angle jitter at 20%, roundness jitter at 15% and minimun roundness is at 20%.



Add the following settings for scattering. I have used 180 for the scatter, 4 for the count and 98% for the count jitter.



And finally add the following settings for colour dynamic. I have used 100% for the foreground/background jitter and 15& for the hue jitter.


Step 4

Now, this is the fun part, start painting over the appropriate areas. To achieve your desired effect you can adjust your paint brush size, adjust the paint colour, add layers and adjust the brush palette.



You should now have a nice image with facial hair.

Solid border

This Photoshop tutorial will teach you how to create a solid border around an image. There are many ways to create this effect but this is probably the easiest method.

For this tutorial I have used a free stock image of a cyclist which is available at:www.sxc.hu

Step 1

Open an image in Photoshop.




Step 2

Using the rectangular marquee tool drag a rectangle shape near the border of your image like below:



Now choose select > inverse and hit the delete key.

Step 3

Select the paint bucket tool and choose a colour you wish and fill the white border with your selected colour.



You should now have an image with a nice solid border.

Rounded image corners

This Photoshop tutorial will teach you how to create rounded image corners. This effect is very simple and only requires the rectangular marquee tool.

For this tutorial I have used a free stock image of a forest which is available at:www.sxc.hu

Step 1

Open an image in Photoshop.




Step 2


Using the rectangular marquee tool drag a rectangle shape similar to below.



Choose select > modify > smooth and set the sample radius to 15px.


Step 3

Now choose select > inverse and hit the delete button and press Ctrl + D to deselect image.



You should now have a nice image with rounded corners.

Change sunset colour

This Photoshop tutorial will teach you how to change the colour of the sunset. This tutorial is very simple and only requires altering the hue/saturation levels.

Step 1

Open an image in Photoshop and then create a new layer by select




Step 2

Create a new hue/saturation layer by selecting layer > New Adjustment Layer>Hue/Saturation. A window should appear, click ok.




Step 3

Change the hue level to your preference.
You can also change the saturation level if you wish. I used 94 for the hue and 35 for the saturation.



You should now have a nice coloured sunset.

Merging images

This Photoshop tutorial will teach you how to merge different objects in images together. This effect is very simple and requires using masked layers.

For this tutorial I have used a free stock image of a watermelon and an ocean which is available at: www.sxc.hu


Merging images

Step 1

Open two images in Photoshop.
Select one of the images by selecting Select>All and copy it by selecting Edit>Copy.
Paste your selected image to the other image by selecting Edit > Paste.




Step 2

Add a reveal all layer mask by selecting Layer > layer mask > reveal all.


Step 3

Lower the opacity of the image to 60%.





Step 4

Using a black paint brush, paint the areas over where you don’t want see.



You should now have a nice merged image effect.

Photoshop is a popular graphics editing program used by many professionals, and is regarded as the industry standard tool for image and graphic editing. This makes Photoshop very costly. I have provided a list of free open source alternative to Photoshop.

Picasa

This is basic image editing tool provided by Google.

The features include:

  • Locate and organise all the photos on your computer.
  • Edit and add effects to your photos with a few simple clicks.
  • Share your photos with others through email, prints and on the web : it’s fast, easy and free.

Paint.NET


This is an open source bitmap drawing and editing application.

The feature include:
  • An intuitive and innovative user interface with support for layers.
  • Unlimited undo, special effects, and a wide variety of useful and powerful tools.
  • An active and growing online community provides friendly help, tutorials and plugins.

CinePaint 0.22

CinePaint is a deep paint image retouching tool that supports higher color fidelity than ordinary painting tools

The features include:
  • used to retouch feature films and in pro photography.
  • CinePaint opens high fidelity image file formats such as DPX, 16-bit TIFF, and OpenEXR, and conventional formats like JPEG and PNG
  • It supports 8-bit, 16-bit and 32-bit color channels, HDR and CMS.

Krita is a painting and image editing application for KOffice.

Probably the oldest and most well-known open source graphic application - GNU Image Manipulation Program or Gimp was started in 1995 and has since then grown to the status it has today.

GIMPshop is a modification of the free/open source GNU Image Manipulation Program (GIMP), intended to replicate the feel of Adobe Photoshop. Its primary purpose is to make users of Photoshop feel comfortable using GIMP.

The features include:
  • It shares all GIMP's advantages, including the long feature list and customisability, while addressing some common criticisms regarding the program's interface
  • Supports all GIMP's own plugins, filters, brushes, etc. remain available.
  • many Photoshop tutorials can be followed in GIMPshop unchanged, and most others can be adapted for GIMPshop users with minimal effort.

Add clouds to an image

This Photoshop tutorial will teach you how to add clouds to a background of any image. This is tutorial is useful if you want to add clouds to an image without clouds. There are many ways to create this effect but I have used the cloud filter.

For this tutorial I use a free stock image of a field which is available at:www.sxc.hu

Step 1

Open an image in Photoshop.


Step 2

Duplicate layer by selecting ctrl + J.
Now go to filter > render > clouds. There should be a black and white cloudy image.




Step 3

Change the blending mode to screen.
Add a Reveal all layer mask by selecting Layer > Layer mask > Reveal all.




Step 4

Using a black paint brush, paint the areas where you don’t want any clouds. This would be most of the image.



You should now have an image with some nice clouds.

Black and white image

This Photoshop tutorial will teach you how to convert an image into black and white. This is very simple tutorial and only requires changing the greyscale option.

For this tutorial I have used a free stock image of a car which is available at: www.sxc.hu

Step 1

Open an image in Photoshop.




Step 2


Choose Image > Mode > Grayscale. If asked to discard colour info, click OK.



You should now have a nice black and white image.

Create soft border

This Photoshop tutorial will teach you how to create a soft border around an image. This creates a white faded effect around the border and is useful if you want to soften up the borders of an image.
For this tutorial I used a free stock image of sun flowers which is available at: www.sxc.hu

Open image in Photoshop.




Step 2

Select the rectangular marquee tool and draw a rectangle near the border of the image.




Step 3

Select the feather option which is select > feather. I chose 20px for the feather radius. You can experiment with a different radius if you wish. Then click Ok.




Step 4

Now chose select > inverse and then hit the delete key twice. Make sure the foreground colour is set to black.




You should now have a nice soft border around your image.

Remove background from image using Photoshop

This Photoshop tutorial will teach you how to remove the background from an image. There are many ways to remove the background from an image.

I will show you with the extract filter which is probably the easiest method. For this tutorial I have used a free stock image of horses which is available at: www.sxc.hu.

Step 1

Open an image in Photoshop.




Step 2

Select Filter > Extract. A Window should pop up.
Using the tool already selected draw an outline of the area you wish to keep.




Step 3

Choose the paint bucket tool and fill the area you wish to keep.
Click Ok.



You should now have an image with no background. If there is still some background left on your image, use the eraser tool to tidy it up.
